Working Life of Income Inadequate for UK Workers to Become Part of Richest 10%, Report Reveals

According to fresh analysis, the typical earner in the UK would need half a century of salary to attain the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Expanding Economic Disparity Across Decades

This research examined net worth data from the recent health crisis years and determined that in the mid-2000s, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to join the wealthiest decile of the wealth distribution.

A research lead part of the report commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The study discovered that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3 million in real terms by the pandemic years.

The analyst added: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – those who commence life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the wealth gap growing in actual numbers, the share of total wealth in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the analysis.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Termed "passive" gains, via increasing property values and adjustments to pension valuations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, as stated in the study.

These gains generally flowed to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135,000 in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

There were also significant regional variations, with the typical amount of net worth in 2020-22 amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where property prices have generally grown substantially, as opposed to £110,000 in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the data shows numerous families were able to save, increasing their wealth.

Wealthier families fared much better, however. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the typical family in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
