Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
