The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
