Much like bad weather tore through the northern region the previous evening, Manchester City overwhelmed United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Successive Setbacks for United

This result represented successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle league and continental football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared fatigued throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Overpowering Start

They added to their cushion with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the middle from defense, the pitch opened up for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before sending a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in possession saw Hemp given the room to fire a attempt home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to record a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any side who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to put them in a strong situation after nine games.
