Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
