Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
