2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having spent the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the weeks to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and tests that change every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and trust your group can secure victory? The decision is yours."
The game does not have an announced debut schedule or consoles, but fans can expect further news as development advances.
